Who you send to: everyone, a segment, or tags
In the draft screen, under Trimite către, you have three options. The choice is not cumulative: if both tags and a segment stay saved on the campaign, the segment wins and the tags are ignored.
- All active subscribers: your whole list, for a regular newsletter with no segmentation
- A saved segment: the segment rules, recalculated at send time. Any targeting that needs AND, NOT, a date, or behaviour goes through here
- Tags: anyone who has at least one of the ticked tags
Only active subscribers are counted. Unsubscribed people and dead addresses never enter, in any of the three targets.
Tags are always OR
Ticking three tags returns anyone who has at least one of them. It never returns the intersection, meaning the people who have all three.
A common example: you have the tag of an archive of 600 people and, inside it, three cohorts of 30. You tick the archive and the three cohorts, thinking you are narrowing down. The counter still shows 600, because everyone in the cohorts is already in the archive.
- You want any of tags A, B, C: choose Tags and tick all three
- You want only subset B of A: choose Tags and tick B alone
- You want A and B, a real intersection: you need a saved segment, with the rule Has all tags
- You want A and not B: a saved segment with two rules in the top group
The tag screen cannot exclude anyone. Exclusion exists only in segments, through the operator Does not have the tags, which means none of the ticked ones.
Read the counter before you send
The number of recipients appears under your selection. That number only verifies something if you know what to expect beforehand. Read afterwards, it confirms any mistake you made.
So write down the number you expect, then look at the counter. If it shows the size of the whole list when you wanted a slice of it, a rule did not apply. The same number must also appear in the draft screen once you pick the segment. If it differs, stop there.
The number sent can be smaller than the counter
At send time, the platform automatically removes three more groups, on top of what the segment says:
- anyone in the middle of an automation, welcome or lead magnet
- anyone who came in transactionally, without newsletter consent
- anyone who already received this campaign in an earlier attempt
The difference is normal and shows up in the report. A large difference usually means you started an automation and sent a campaign to the same people on the same day.
