Open and click tracking: where it is switched on

2 min read

Opens and clicks are not measured on their own. They depend on a record you add at your hosting provider, along with the others, when you connect your domain.

The record that does the measuring

Among the records ClevMail gives you when connecting your domain there is a CNAME one, named something like links.news.yourdomain.com. That is the one that measures.

Without it, your campaigns go out normally and arrive normally. Only your reports show zero opens and zero clicks, forever, with no error message. There is no toggle in the app that switches tracking on.

If your domain was connected a while ago

Accounts that connected their domain before the end of August 2026 may not have this record, because it was not required then. Domains connected since then start with tracking ready from the first day.

If you see zero opens on campaigns that certainly arrived, this is the first thing to check, and the article about reports showing zero tells you how.

What the numbers mean once it works

Opens are an estimate, not a count. They are measured through a small invisible image loaded when the email is opened. Clients that do not load images never report the open, and Apple's privacy protection loads images on its own even when nobody opened anything. So the number is inflated for some and understated for others.

Clicks are a real count. They are measured through the clicked link, which passes through your tracking subdomain. That is why clicks say more about interest than opens do.

When comparing one campaign with another, compare the clicks. When looking at a single campaign, opens tell you at most whether the subject line worked.
